The following people have been successful in recent gradings, and are
now ready to take their training to the next level.
The enthusiasm and dedication of our students is the life blood of the
association, so it is always encouraging to see students continuing to
progress. Cangratulations everyone.

Master Tony Frances - 30 Years a Black Belt
On Sun 13th June over a 100 Instructors, students,
family and friends of Master Tony
Francis gathered at the St. Peters Hall in Loughborough to host a
'surprise' celebration to mark his 30yrs as a Black-Belt in the Art
Form.
In his opening speech Ustad B.S Dhaliwal said " milestones are
important in Life and they should be acknowledged and celebrated. In
Life's relentless drive forward they enable us to pause for a
while....Reflect and Contemplate and enable us to identify our
'postion' on the landscape of Life so that we can 'see' where we have
come from, where we are and where we want to get to".
Ustad Dhaliwal, Master Trev Brindley, Ustad Glenn Francis and several
other colleagues of Tony from those early years of the 70's then came
forward to pay Tribute and to entertain the guests with stories of what
Tony was like as a 'beginner student' in those heady days....how he
would train 7 days a week, use his brother Glenn as 'target practice',
how Ustad Dhaliwal eventually got him to start using his now legendary
leg techniques, how Tony, Glenn and Bal, as Blue-Belts !!! were'nt
allowed to train until they had each broken a house brick!!....hundreds
of wonderful stories were exchanged all evening.
Ustad Dhaliwal described Master Francis as a 'Living Treasures of the
Art'. His exceptional strength and technical skills, the depth and
breadth of his knowledge, his focus and dedication to improve and
better himself, his commitment to help and encourage others and his
complete and genuine humility make him a supreme role model of the
Associaiton.
To mark this wonderful event Tony was presented with a specially
commissioned bronze statue of a Tiger made by the internationally
renowned sculptor David Meredith ( Thurmaston Tetsudo Centre)....which
for those of us who know Tony is a most apt symbol of his Art.
The evening ended with an amazing buffet prepared by Tony's wife Pat
and Friends. A special 'Thank You' goes to Patsy Gibbs and Eef ( L'boro
Tetsudo Centre ) who planned and worked so hard to make this evening
such a success.

27th Anniversary
Click on the picture to see more.
On Friday 7th May
2010 Master Trevor Brindley, Master Martin Sharratt
and Ustad Colin Smith celebrated a milestone 27 year Anniversary of
their BB Presentation. In the May of 1983 a thousand members of the Art
Form gathered at the Romeo & Juliet Night-Club in Derby to witness
the presentation of the Black-Belt Grade to five students...Trevor
Brindley, Martin Sharratt, Colin Smith, Phil Ledger, David Nickless and
Theo Zymia. They had embarked on this fantastic journey 8 years
earlier in 1975 when they walked through the doors of the Meadows
Social Club in Derby where the first Derby club was established. This
particular group of students is unique in that they have collectively
celebrated the evening of their anniversary EVERY year for the past 27
years!
This year's anniversary was celebrated with a special evening at the
Old English Gentleman Pub in Loughborough where a buffet was laid on
and all the Black-Belts from the Friday session attended to pay homage
and respect to these Ustads. It was a wonderful evening full of warm
nostalgia and much laughter and I am told that the celebrations went on
until the early hours of the morning!
Ustad B.S.Dhaliwal said " I am deeply honored and priviliged to have
been part of the wonderful journey that Trevor, Martin and Colin have
travelled. They have made the transition from being my Students to
being my Colleagues to being my Peers and ultimately to being my valued
Friends and as TRUE students of the Art Form they have made this
journey in a Humble and Noble Way . On behalf of all members of the
Association I extend our Congratulations to them ".
Black-belt Grading Success
Congratulations
to Diane
Davey on achieving her 3rd Degree Black Belt
and to Jon Reynolds and Bruce Campbell who achieved their 2nd Degree
Grades. The gradings were conducted on the 24th April under the
watchful eyes
of Masters Trevor Brindley, Tony Francis and Martin Sharratt. For
nearly two hours the candidates had to exhibit a whole range of
Techniques, Kedhs, Freestyle formats and Brick Breaking Techniques.
Well Done Guys!!
The Summer Camp
at Great Hucklow
The
Summer Camp has an unbroken 30 year history and is a unique part of the
Art Form's psyche and history, where some of the most powerful,
formative and enjoyable memories of Association members have been
formed. From 1979 upto the mid-eighties the Camp was held at a huge
farmhouse in Somerset and it was during these years that Master Vivian
Dhaliwal and B.S.Dhaliwal formulated the Camp's definitive and
demanding 'nature, ambiance and training ' regime....not to mention the
iconic 'tea-pot' full of Harold's home-made scrumpy!! (P.S....if any of
the 'Old Boys/Girls' have got any pics of those days, any chance you
could let Ustad BSD have them for scanning into the Assn archives )
Eventually, Somerset farmhouse became no longer available ( the
farmer's own family was growing up and it became difficult to
accommodate 15 'fit for fighting' adults there as well 6 family adults
and 8 grand-children !!...not that Harold and Mary ever minded ).
In 1985 Ustad Dhaliwal asked Ustad's Jay Spencer and Dawn Nicholson to
identify for the Association a suitable venue in the Derby Dales/Lower
Peaks area....and they came upon an old Scout Camp that was to
eventually become the Great Hucklow Experience. During the early years
ustad J. Spencer was supported by Ustad's Martin Price, Michael Newton
and Dawn Nicholson but from 1996 ustad Martin Price has been the
Principal Instructor in charge of the Hucklow Camp. The Camp's regime
provides a unique opportunity to learn about the Art Form in a greater
depth, experience the joy of witnessing the early morning sunrise,
train in the most beautiful natural surroundings, make new friends and
experience dimensions of your Being that you did'nt even know existed.
If you have'nt been before....than GO!!...it's something every student
should experience ONCE in their training life.
The 2010 Hucklow camp is from Mon 2nd
Aug - Fri 6th Aug. Ask your Instructor for full details or contact
Ustad Martin Price.

The new year Demomstration was a great
success, as always, with very fine performances by all the
Demonstration Team. It is always such an inspiration to watch the
spirit of Tetsudo brought to life by our Black-Belt practitioners. The
audience, of all ages, showed their appreciation with their
enthusiastic and spirited reception.
Special Christmas
Message from Ustad BS Dhaliwal
"This year appears
to have passed at the proverbial 'warp-factor 10' speed. Nevertheless,
we, as an Association, and Guardians of the Philosophy and Concepts of
the Maha Ustad Tetsura, have achieved so much. 2009 has seen a new wave
of students start training in our Noble Art...we warmly welcome them,
and hope that they will both enjoy, and derive great personal benefit
from, the Art of Tetsudo. Our student base is strong, and with six new
Black-Belts coming into the Ranks this year, our Instructor base is
stronger than ever before. When I sometimes visit the Friday Black-Belt
session in Loughborough I can 'feel' the sense of vibrancy, and
excitement. I feel proud that the Tetsudo Black-Belts, as a 'body',
represent some of the finest martial artists in the World.
2009 has been a year
full of events. Starting with the New Year Party Tribute demonstration
to Master Vivian Dhaliwal...what a stunning, powerful, elegant demo, in
which many Black-Belts came out to pay tribute to the many qualities of
Vivian, which helped and personally inspired them. This was followed by
a phenomenal turn out at the 'Kick Cancer Out' event, which raised a
fantastic amount of funds for cancer research. Then the National
Competition in Sept again provided a great day of stunning artistic
displays from the whole spectrum of grades of the Association
membership. Congratulations to all the participants and the winners,
and runners-up, and of course all the organisers, (it's a huge event to
plan out),....you ALL, collectively, make it such a memorable event,
every year.
This was followed by
a Grand Charity Ball held at Loughborough University. This was, truly,
a wonderful event, in which everyone,(over 220 people ), dressed up in
formal 'Black & Gold' attire, to enjoy a fantastic evening, and
raise funds for the 'Vivian Research Scholarship'. In amongst all this
there were numerous Area/Club functions, and parties, that made the
whole year full, exciting and vibrant. In the new year, the Association
is launching a major initiative to open up new geographical areas,
especially in London and Kent. I look forward to 2010, with much Hope
and Optimism.
I would like to
express my deepest gratitude to you ALL, for your support over the last
year, to me and my Family, and to the Tetsudo association.
I wish you ALL, a
wonderful Christmas, and Happy, Peaceful Year ahead".
"
The Vivian Dhaliwal Charity Ball, held on Sat 3rd of Oct was one of the
most stunning events of the Association's calendar. Over two hundred
Family, Friends and Association members packed the Sir Dennis
Rooke Ballroom at Loughborough University to pay Tribute to one of the
most enigmatic personalities of the Art Form and to raise funds for
promoting research into cancer care and therapy.
The
dress theme of the night was 'Black
& Gold' and everyone made such a fantastic effort to 'dress up'
that at times it almost became difficult to recognise some of the
guests!! Throughout the evening dance and theatre entertainment was
provided by the Bill Brookman Foundation Group who astounded all the
guests with their dance routines, mannequin statues and table magic.
During the evening there was an auction of some fantastic prizes which
included wonderfully sculptured wildlife figures by the internationally
renowned sculptor David Meredith! a day at B'ham City Football club to
see their match with Man City from the Directors Box!, a day at a
premier golf course which was hosting the Ryder Cup on that day!...and
many more. This was followed by a meal praised by all. The evening
ended with dancing to fantastic music provided by The Evolution (
courtesy of Sue Langham )....and in the process of such enjoyment,
which Ustadan Vivian would have wanted in her memory, much need funds
were raised for a truly worthy cause.
Mr
Dhaliwal would personally like to thank each and everyone involved in
making this event such a wonderful success".
2009 Competition
The
National Competition was a great success this year with inspiring
performances at all levels: a great opportunity for everyone to show
off their skills, have lots of fun, and catch up with old friends.
Organisers
should be congratulated for a well run event, as they worked tirelessly
to ensure everything ran like clockwork, from begining to end.

Triathlon - 28th June 2009
Paul Stimpson - Fund Raising Event
Paul Stimpson from
Coventry Club took part in a Triathlon event in the Lake District on
28th June 2009. This started with a 1.2 mile swim in Ullswater, folowed
by a 56 mile cycle round the lakes, and ending with a 13 mile run
through Barton Fell. He must be a very fit fellow. He says he was
inspired by Tony's picture at the New Year Demo - following the winding
path up the mountain.
Paul says -"When I
got closer to the finish, hear people cheering, I was happy and
exhausted all at the same time, what a feeling running into the
finishing area and across the line... Wow had I just done that".
"My total time came in at 7hours 19mins 28secs.
I would like to thank everyone for all their good luck and support. I
feel so humble.
Plus thank you for supporting the Vivian Cancer Reasearch Fund".

This event was very well attended
by both students and instructors, and everyone seemed to have a really
good time. Starting with the usual warm-up we went on to combinations,
basic techniques, khed, freestyle and pad work, all under the watchful
eye of the many blackbelts. Students of the art-form just love the
opportunity to practice it, and with a few useful tips from the
instructors, and more time, we all hope to keep improving. It's always
inspiring to see, and practice with, students from other clubs, and
valuable to get input from other instructors.
The time flew by, which is always
a sign of how enjoyable the event is, and it was all over so quickly,
though we had been hard at it for a couple of hours or so. A big thank
you to Master Tony Francis, and Matt Kendrick, and all the other
instructors who helped to make the evening such a memorable one.
"On behalf of the Trustees of the
Vivian Cancer Research Fund I wish to express my deepest gratitude and
a big Thank You to all the members, families and friends who made such
a fantastic and generous effort to raise such a large amount of money
for a cause so dear to our Hearts. I and my family are personally
grateful to all of you and once again wish to say a heartfelt " Thank
You ". The Trustees will now decide how to allocate this money and
further funds from the hugely successful Charity Ball and we will keep
you fully informed.
With Respect and Gratitude to
All.
Ustad B. S. Dhaliwal.
New Black-Belts May 2009

The Black- Belt Presentation is,
to me, THE most important Event of our calender. It is an event at
which we should ALL gather to pay Respect, and Tribute, to the efforts
of fellow practitioners who have, through much endeavour, and struggle,
achieved a Milestone in the Journey of their development, both as
Artists, and as People. This Event alone, serves to keep in the mind of
every student, an awareness of their own goals, and aspirations, and,
through this awareness, the 'fire' of stimulation is kept alive. This
Event alone, furnishes us ALL with the hope, and realisation, that,
with Patience, Application, and Guidance, we too, can achieve beyond
ourselves....because 'ordinary people' like us, have managed to take
that quantum leap. This Event makes us 'look' at our selves, evaluate,
and appraise, our own attitude to our training. And, it should not
matter whether we know these people on a personal basis, or not....they
are our colleagues, and we share the same 'struggles and hopes'. - BS
Dhaliwal.
Filey Family Fun Weekend -May 2009

May Bank Holiday
weekend 1st - 4th May 2009
Continuing the tradition of going
away with family and friends, for the May Bank Holiday weekend, we
returned to Primrose Valley Haven site, at Filey, for the 2009 event.
This year, 10 groups came on the family fun weekend; groups from Derby,
Coventry and Leicester areas, about 40 people in all, and about 20 of
these were Blackbelts, which makes for a very high student, instructor
ratio. The park welcomed us as a group, and arranged for most of our
caravans to be allocated close to each other. Some even had sea views!
(Please don’t expect this every time). The weekend went well, the
weather was kind, and many of those who came have already booked at the
site, to return again next year.
The weekend was very informal: we
startied by meeting up with everyone on the Friday evening, in the main
entertainment bar. Then, on the Saturday and Sunday mornings, as the
weather was good, we were able to train. Saturday was the best day,
weather wise; it was calm and sunny, so we went to the beach for a few
hours. This year, we trained just after high tide, which meant that the
sea was very close. It is an inspiring experience to be on the beach,
within inches of the waves, living the Kedh, and working together in
freestyle.
Sunday morning, the tide was just
coming to high tide, so the strip of sand and shingle would have been
even narrower, so we decided to train on the park recreation ground
instead. In the shelter of the trees and caravans, it was once again
warm and sunny, and our presence on the site attracted quite a few
interested spectators. Many thanks to all who participated.
In the afternoons, some groups
visited Scarborough, or walked to Filey, along the beach, some groups
were just happy to chill out, and talk. Saturday evening, some groups
went to the on site Chinese restaurant, for a four course meal, which
proved to be very popular, and then we visited caravans, and
socialised. On the Sunday evening, we organised a “bring and share”
barbeque for everyone, which was also very successful, although the
weather was a bit more eventful that evening, and the Barbies were lit
in the rain, under an umbrella. Fortunately the rain soon drifted away,
and the sun re-emerged, making it a very merry evening, in more ways
than one.
The popularity of Filey, is a
simple recipe of training, and informal social activity, which gives a
chance to meet new friends, and renew old ones. We will be there again
next year, 30th April – 3rd May 2010. If you would like to join us, you
need to decide who will be in your caravan, and ask the lead person in
your family/party, to make the booking for you. To do this, you need to
telephone the park group bookings manager, direct on 0871 2310892, to
give details of your party, and pay for the accommodation. All bookings
must be made over the phone, by Visa or Switch. The prices are listed
on the Haven website, www.havenholidays.com. Be sure to mention that
you wish to be near the existing bookings, in the Tetsudo group. Book
early for the best deals, Primrose valley is a popular site, if you
leave it too late, you may find that it is booked up.

Annual Demonstration 2009
Friday 9th January 2009
Click on the Picture below for slide-shows
and videos
This was a very special event this
year, being not only the annual demonstration, which is always
memorable, but also a memorial event for Viv Dhaliwal, who was awarded
a Mastergrade during a special ceremony after the demo. All through the
demo, people spoke, sometimes very emotionally, of the special
qualities that Viv brought into life, and especially into Tetsudo. To a
large extent the demonstrations were demonstrations of those very
qualities.
We were given the memorable treat
of seeing the art form at its highest manifestation, and this year we
were especially honoured by Mr BS Dhaliwal himself, demonstrating his
unique ability to break a brick through another person's hand, and this
tme through two hands, specifically those of his sons, who, with
admirable trust and bravery, laid their hands on top of the brick to be
broken. They suffered no apparent injury or discomfort.
Mr Dhaliwal also picked out a few
unsuspecting blackbelts from the audience to do impromptu
demonstrations, and these especially demonstrated the quality of being
always able to respond 100% to unexpected events. These included a
beautiful Khed by Ustad Bhal Singh, a remarkably calm and "laid-back"
brick break by Master Trevor Brindley, and awe-inspiring freestyle from
Master Tony Francis.
For those unfortunate enough to
not be there, and for those who would like to experience the evening a
second time, a DVD will be available soon. There is also available a
two hour double DVD of the 2008 Competition, and for those who attended
the Khed Course in August there is now available a one hour DVD of the
course. There is nothing like watching yourself and others on DVD to
help you get things right. The Junior competition video has been
delayed because of technical problems caused by the very poor and
uneven lighting in the hall, but it is hoped to be able to use computer
wizardry to get round that, and release it soon. It will be one hour
long. Please order through your Instructor: Instructors can order from
Black-Belt Claire Spilaine. The pricing for these new DVDs is under
discussion at the moment, and will be announced soon.
Sunday at Moorways, saw the 2008
Senior grades competition with many inspiring performances of Kedh, and
freestyle, especially from the black-belts who put in truly exemplary
performances, and who were, without exception, a pleasure to watch. The
rest of us, who are still aspiring to reach that standard, also put on
a good show, with many fine performances.
As the "official photographer", I
got to be really close to the action all day, and so thoroughly enjoyed
it - a pleasure to watch.
For those who coudn't attend, I am
working on the video, and hope it will be available very soon, along
with some "stills" from the movie footage, and in the mean-time, the
slide show is available above. For those who did attend, the pictures
should be a nice reminder of what a great time we all had.
The 2008 National Competition has
been split into two this year, and the first event, for Junior grades,
was a great success. It might mean more work for those involved in the
administration, but certainly made the day less hectic, and easier to
get everything fitted into the time. With such a very high standard of
entries, it must have been hard for judges to decide the winners.
Winners or not, the competition does tend to bring out peoples best
performances, and it is a great pleasure to watch people perform, and
to see how much progress they have made. This is, after all what
Tetsudo is about, a journey, and an adventurous one at that, learning
to focus, to make an effort, and to keep moving forwards.
For those who coudn't attend, an
HD wide-screen video was made, and this will be available soon, along
with some "stills" from the movie footage, and in the mean-time, the
slide show is available above. For those who did attend, the pictures
should be a nice reminder of what a great time we all had.
Kedh Course
Sunday 3rd August 2008
Click on a Picture below for 2 slide-shows
The Kedh Course was so well
attended that there was only just enough room for everyone. Organised
chaos was the impression you might get as a bystander, with different
groups, practicing different Kedhs, with different instructors, all
shouting out different counts and instructions, all at the same time, .
There was an enormous buzz in the hall, and the instructors seemed to
have endless energy and patience, as they put their groups through the
Kedhs again and again, until they got it right, or at least better. At
times the floor was cleared and small groups came out to perform their
Kedhs. It was a pleasure to watch, and although people were at all
levels and abilities, and some were a bit shy when it came to
"emotional content", everyone made a good effort.
The time seemed to fly along,
which is always a good sign, and I could hardly believe four hours had
gone by when it came to an end. I think the instructors should be
congratulated for putting on such an excellant course, which was very
well planned and ran like clockwork throughout the afternoon. I am sure
that all who attended will have gained a great deal from the course.
On 1st April 2008 the Long Eaton
Club, Nottingham Area, hosted a mass training session, which was
attended by 70 participants, and afterwards celebrated at the
Chandelier restaurant.
(See slide-show)
A similar event was hosted by the Heanor Club, Derby
Area on the 30th June. This event was attended by 40 practitioners from
as far as the Leicester area, and celebrated afterwards at the Noble
House restaurant.
This formula of a themed evening
session, followed by a light supper at a local restaurant has proved
very popular. Many thanks to all who organised and attended the events,
on both occassions a great time was had by all.
This event organised by the
teaching committee and the referees for the national competition was a
most valuable opportunity to learn about competitive, fusion and
compromise freestyle in readiness for the national competitions which
will take place in September.
Students who attended received
personal feedback on their approach to each kind of freestyle and had
the chance to work on their fusion and competitive freestyle strategies
with experienced blackbelts.
It was disappointing that only a
small group of students were able to attend but those who came left
inspired and encouraged to enter the national competition with
confidence.
Many thanks to all the organisers
and participants who made the event a most enjoyable experience
